On Saturday, July 12, 2025, Caribbean Diaspora United Inc. (CDU) hosted its highly anticipated Community Unity Breakfast at the prestigious Russo’s On The Bay in Howard Beach, New York. The event—held under the theme “Unity and Inclusion”—brought together elected officials, community leaders, and members of the Caribbean diaspora to celebrate shared values, build connections, and unveil a bold new vision for regional advancement.

The breakfast was more than just a ceremonial gathering—it marked the launch of several significant initiatives, most notably the CDU Disaster Fund, designed to support Caribbean nations in the immediate aftermath of natural disasters. “No more scrambling for fish fries or chicken dinners after disaster strikes,” said Eugene Pursoo, President of CDU. “This fund ensures we’re always prepared—ready to respond quickly and effectively.” The fund will be managed by a CDU-appointed committee and supported through contributions from donors, corporations, and community members.

Delivering the keynote address was The Honorable Pennelope Beckles, Leader of the Opposition of Trinidad and Tobago and the first female leader of the People’s National Movement (PNM). A former UN Ambassador, Beckles inspired the audience with a message of hope, unity, and cooperation across borders. “We hope her message will renew our commitment to working together on everything from economic development to culture and sports,” Pursoo noted.

In an interview with Caribbean American Weekly ahead of the event, Pursoo emphasized CDU’s twofold mission: to improve Caribbean communities in the U.S. and to contribute meaningfully to the development of the Caribbean region itself. “We believe that by improving our communities here, we also uplift the entire diaspora,” he said.

The breakfast also featured the announcement of two intergenerational programs:

The Council of Elders, created to honor and preserve the wisdom of senior community leaders.

The Youth Brigade, a mentorship and leadership initiative that includes short-term study abroad opportunities in the Caribbean.

Additionally, CDU unveiled plans for a Virtual Caribbean Hall of Fame, a digital archive celebrating the achievements of Caribbean icons—from political leaders like Eric Williams and Norman Manley to cultural legends like Bob Marley, The Mighty Sparrow, and renowned athletes. “This is about legacy and inspiration,” Pursoo said. “Our youth deserve access to the stories that shaped us.”

Tickets for the Community Unity Breakfast were available via CDU’s website, with livestream options for those unable to attend in person. Attendees were encouraged to donate to the newly launched Disaster Fund and explore other ways to support CDU’s programs.

In closing, Pursoo issued a heartfelt call to action: “Come break bread with us. Let’s listen to each other’s stories, enjoy our shared culture, and start building the future we want—together.”
