“Look like I have to put meh gyal on loan.”That chorus line from Kris “KI” Persad’s chutney soca track “Loan” captures the spirit of the song and the man himself. Delivered with humour, cheek and a wink of defiance, it is the kind of phrase that compels you to listen further. He sings:
Look like I have to put meh gyal on loan
Cause all de fellas I know
Cyah find on dey own
Every time I go out I have to hide she
Dey begging me for she
Look like I have to put my gyal on loan
But for the Canada-based, three-time Chutney Soca Monarch, it is much more than a catchy lyric. It is a reflection on love, loyalty, and what happens when temptation comes knocking.
“I always write music based on things I’ve seen people experience or experienced myself,” KI told the Kitcharee last Friday. “This song is solely about when a man’s wife is always being chased by other men, knowing that she’s taken. I once heard someone say, ‘Like they want me to put my girl on loan.’ But of course the actuality of putting a woman or anyone at all on loan is a silly concept. The song is just based on the behaviour from other men always after my girl, and the fact that I won’t ever let that happen.” Read More
