Lani K’s ‘Shout to the Lord’

Lani K” (Jalani Kojo) has always used music to process his pain, express his truth, and challenge convention. But his newest release, the gospel track “Shout to the Lord”, marks a spiritual and sonic turning point in the singer’s life.


The single comes after a five-year absence from the stage—a hiatus that followed what many assumed was his upward rise in calypso.


In 2020, he placed third in the Young Kings Calypso Monarch competition and advanced to the Calypso Monarch semi-final round. Then, silence. Until now.


“My newest release, ‘Shout to the Lord’, is really a testimony of the goodness of God, I would say, and where He’s brought me from,” Lani told the Kitcharee on Wednesday.


“Carnival 2020 was the last time I was seen gracing the stage until my re-entry in 2025...I came off the season on a positive high, which unfortunately landed to the lowest depths of depression for me, when Covid-19 took the world by surprise.”


Lani K described those years as the darkest of his life. Out of work. Separated from the mother of his children. Struggling internally with trauma and addiction to distraction. But it was in that isolation that he found clarity—and ultimately, healing. Read More
