‘Stop, Wait, Think.
Don’t wild up yourself on instinct
Think of all the women who fought for we
To be respected pillars in society
Tell me what it’s worth
Fighting for a man who don’t see your worth
Singing Sandra must be turning in she grave to see
Like allyuh honey ain’t have no damn dignity
Ask yuh man
way two a dem does knock
If is the same place allyuh does rock
Ask yuh man.’
That’s the sound advice from 2020 Calypso Monarch Terri Lyons in her latest calypso “Ask Yuh Man”. Never one to mince words, she calls on women to reclaim their power in the face of infidelity, urging them to confront the root of the problem: the man. This powerful anthem has already earned her the prestigious Regional Queen of Queens title at the all-female calypso competition in Montserrat, marking an unprecedented third consecutive victory.
Now, Terri hopes that the song, written by fellow calypsonian Maria Bhola, will also gain her a spot at the 2025 National Calypso Monarch competition. Reflecting on the raw, lived experiences behind the lyrics, she shares, “I won’t lie to tell you, some of my horner women I am good with now. They can say I never approached them in any kind of way to fight for no man. Some of them have even told me they are big fans.
“Most times when we sit and have a proper conversation, we realise that we were being bamboozled, we were both lied to.” Terri continues: “Women have to understand that it’s the man who committed to you. Put all questions to him. I was in a relationship before where the man cheated and I asked him, ‘why? Yuh getting everything.’ And while he treated me good also, his answer was ‘because it’s easy. Girls throw themselves at you. We no longer have to work for it out here.’” Read More
